Care Ministry Overview

Messiah Bible Church Care Ministry in San Antonio Texas offers supportive care to those in need, resting firmly on Galatians 6:2: “Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.” We offer two programs: Biblical Counseling Services and Care and Support Groups

Biblical Counseling Services

Those struggling with life who would like to have a trained biblical counselor come alongside for a season may participate in our counseling program.

Counseling is provided at no charge to those who attend Messiah Bible Church (MBC) or their friends (13-17 year olds require parental permission) and takes place over the course of several weeks. As capacity allows, we have two  counselors working with each care receiver. We also provide couples counseling with a trained male and female counselor to work together with the couple.

Our    counselors    have    completed    a    rigorous    biblical    counseling
certification and in-house training prior to being approved to counsel. They also participate in recurring training. They come alongside those in need and walk with them for a season—observing, asking hard questions, speaking truth in love, and encouraging care receivers to do the hard work to resolve their issues.

Our counselors do not try to “fix” the person nor do they tell care receivers what to do. Rather, they point them to the Word of God and the leading of the Holy Spirit, knowing that “all Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).

NOTE: Our counselors are not licensed mental health professionals and we do not provide mental health therapy.

Care and Support Groups

Much personal and spiritual growth may be accomplished through participation in structured Care and Support groups, such as GriefShare, Boundaries, and Changes that Heal. Groups are offered for a specific timeframe (for example, 9-13 weeks or special topic/single session), typically meeting once a week for up to two hours, and include a video seminar, small group discussion, and individual study using a workbook. There is a nominal charge for the materials (generally no more than $25).

The following guiding principles apply to our Care Ministry programs:

Biblical Counseling Services

  • All counsel/guidance is biblically based, resting on the sufficiency of God’s Word and the work of the Holy Spirit
  • Counseling is provided at no charge to those who attend VBVF or their friends (13-17 year olds require parental permission); it is not open to the general public
  • Counselors are unpaid volunteers
  • Counselors may not accept any gift (no matter how small) from care receivers
  • There is no cross-gender counseling
  • Couples/marital counseling requires both a male and female counselor
  • Confidentiality and the limits of confidentiality will be respected

Care and Support Groups

  • Care and Support Groups may be open to the public
  • Group leaders will be trained prior to leading any group
  • Small group discussions should be treated as confidential
  • There is generally a nominal cost to cover materials (workbooks) provided to participants

MBC provides Care Ministry programs to support and build up the Church, God’s body. We hope all who participate, whether counselors or care receivers, group leaders or participants, do so with humility and a sincere desire to grow in their relationship with God and others.
